About Polestar Electric Vehicles

Polestar began as a Swedish brand focused on racing and performance vehicles in the mid-90s, but was acquired by Volvo in 2015. After a few years of producing concept and production vehicles built for setting lap records, in 2017 Volvo made the announcement Polestar would become a standalone brand focused exclusively on electric vehicles.

The company’s first model under this new electrification directive was the Polestar 1, a luxurious plug-in hybrid coupé. Despite the PHEV’s high price tag ($156,500 MRSP), the vehicle was well-received for its attractive styling, powerful powertrain and smooth driving experience. Only about 1,500 units were sold worldwide.

In June 2022, Polestar announced a strategic partnership with battery manufacturer StoreDot to investigate using its extreme fast charging silicon-dominant batteries in future Polestar vehicles. If successful, these vehicles would be capable of charging 100 miles of range in just five minutes.

Rather than sell its cars at traditional dealerships, Polestar offers its vehicles in minimalist “spaces” around the world. Featuring monochrome interiors and individual components on display behind glass, Polestar says its spaces feature “specialists” rather than salespeople.

Polestar plans to increase its presence to at least 30 global markets by the end of 2023, and plans to grow tenfold from global sales of around 29,000 in 2021 to 290,000 by 2025.

Here’s what to know about the latest electric Polestar models (base trims as of Q4 2022):

Polestar 2 – The company’s Polestar 2 is an all-electric compact car with similarities to Tesla’s Model 3 when it comes to price point and performance. However, compared to the Model 3, the Polestar 2’s range leaves something to be desired at 270 miles for the single-motor variant. Drivers can also opt for the power boost of the long-range dual motor version, but range is reduced to 260 miles. New for 2023, the Polestar 2 is being offered in the extremely limited BST Edition 270. This version features numerous hardware updates for even greater performance, but only 270 of these models will ever be produced.

Polestar 3 – Polestar has opened orders for its first all-electric SUV, but the company doesn’t expect deliveries on the vehicle to begin until Q4 of 2023. The Polestar 3 will be the company’s first American-built model and will be offered in two variants: “Dual Motor” and “Dual Motor Performance,” putting out 489 and 517 horsepower, respectively. The Polestar 3’s tech features also promise to be robust, with adaptive cruise control, lane-centering and a 25-speaker sound system offered as standard. The company’s CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, says that the Polestar 3 “is intended to be one of the most climate-responsible cars ever made.”

TBA: Polestar 4 – Polestar has only offered a tease of the Polestar 4, so little is known about this model, which is expected to hit the production line for its 2024 model year. It appears to be a coupe version of the Polestar 3. While the majority of specs are unknown, the company has confirmed the Polestar 4 will be offered with two electric motors, all-wheel drive and a large battery pack to maximize range.

TBA: Polestar 5 – As is the case with the Polestar 4, there isn’t yet a lot of information out on the Polestar 5, but we do know it is expected to launch in 2024 as a hatchback. We also know the Polestar 5 will feature dual electric motors, and the company is targeting 884 horsepower. We also know this vehicle will be based on Polestar’s Precept concept car revealed in early 2020, which signals that this model should be draped in luxurious materials and will likely feature a high price tag.

TBA: Polestar 6 – Polestar just can’t stop teasing new Polestar models – which is a good sign, as it indicates the demand is there. We know the least about this one, but what is confirmed is that the Polestar 6 will be based upon Polestar’s 02 concept sports car. The Polestar 6 will likely be a convertible and is planned to launch in 2026.
