The Hyundai Motor Company began manufacturing hybrids and EVs in 2009 with the introduction of the fully electric BlueOn, a limited-production subcompact five-door hatchback. Today, Hyundai offers nine electrified vehicles, including all-electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and even fuel cell vehicles.

The company says that by 2040, every Hyundai sold in major global markets will be an electrified vehicle. The company also hopes to become 100% carbon neutral by 2045.

Hyundai says it aims to be in the top three providers of electrified vehicles in Europe by the year 2025. By 2030, Hyundai says it plans to release more than 31 electric models and secure 12% of the global EV market.

Here’s what to know about the latest electric Hyundai models (base trims as of Q4 2022):

Kona Electric – Freshly redesigned, the Kona Electric comes with an impressive 10-year warranty and a solid range for its class. The subcompact’s low center of gravity keeps driving at higher speeds smooth and spirited. It has cargo space identical to that of the gas-powered version.

Tucson Hybrid/Plug-In Hybrid – The Tucson Hybrids are a great value choice for those looking for value in a compact SUV. The attractive pricing pairs well with a feature-rich interior that includes a touch screen dash equipped with Apple Play and Android Auto, a ton of cargo space, and a safety-forward design. The Tucson is far from a sports car, but critics say the quiet performance and confident handling measures up to the standards of one.

Santa Fe Hybrid/Plug-In Hybrid – While the Santa Fe Hybrids don’t get the same fuel economy as some of their rival hybrid SUVs, they make up for it in ride and driving experience thanks to Hyundai's quality build and comfortability. Critics are generally impressed with interior material choices and cargo space on offer. The Sante Fe Hybrids finished at the top of the 2022 Hybrid SUV rankings presented by U.S. News and World Report.

IONIQ 5 – The IONIQ 5 model was the first Hyundai developed from the ground up with the intent of having fully electric functionality. Introduced in 2016, the IONIQ offers three different electric powertrain options to choose from. It has one of the highest ranges out there for an all-electric SUV at this price point.

Nexo – The Hyundai Nexo hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicle is part of a very exclusive group, with only a handful of rivals on the market. The Nexo comes equipped with a hydrogen-fuel station locator on the front dash, though, since hydrogen infrastructure is near-nonexistent in the states, good luck getting much use out of it unless most of your driving is done in California. That being said, drivers looking for an alternatively-fueled car that drives like a typical combustion-engine car might find a great option here.

With a roomy cabin and dual 10.25-in. screens on the dash, the comfortability of the vehicle is optimal for long-distance travelers. Speaking of long distance, the Elantra gets up to 56 miles to the gallon – more fuel-efficient than Toyota’s Prius.
