Today, Volvo Cars is perhaps best known for its line of high-class, luxury vehicles, and by the end of the decade, the Swedish multinational manufacturer plans to fully electrify its portfolio.
First unveiled to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011, Volvo Cars made its first big step towards electrification when it began producing the Volvo V60 in 2012. The V60 was the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid that could be powered by either diesel alone, as a diesel-electric hybrid, or as a fully-electric car. At the time, this was something that no other manufacturer could offer.
As of 2022, Volvo Cars has discontinued all variants of the V60 model range except for the gas-powered AWD Cross Country model and the Recharge PHEV version.
In 2019, the company became the first automotive manufacturer to announce it would produce all forthcoming models with some form of electric propulsion, whether as hybrids or all-battery models. Volvo also released its first fully-electric SUV that same year, the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8, which the company calls a “reinvention” of its XC40 subcompact.
In June of 2021, Volvo Cars and Northvolt, a Swedish battery developer and manufacturer, announced a joint venture consisting of building a battery giga-factory and research and development center, with construction set to begin by 2023 in Gothenburg.
