A cornerstone of the company’s electrification strategy is what GM calls “Ultium” – a battery pack that the company says costs nearly 40% lower than those in the Chevrolet Bolt EV. And, GM projects the second generation of these batteries will cost nearly 60% less than the batteries being used today.
Between 2020 and 2025, GM says it will have invested $35 billion globally in EV and AV product development spending, exceeding even the company’s gas and diesel investment in that time. The investment also includes plans to make GM’s Detroit, Michigan and Spring Hill, Tennessee assembly plants dedicated to electric vehicle production.
Not to be overlooked, GM is also backing up its electric vehicle investment via a partnership with charging company EVgo. Through this partnership, the companies say they aim to accelerate EV adoption by adding 2,700 fast charging stations in locations across the U.S. by 2025.
Here’s what to know about the latest electric GM models (base trims as of Q4 2022):
Chevrolet Equinox EV – Between its base price, decent range and plenty of options available to upgrade performance, GM is banking on the Equinox EV as its ticket into becoming a mainstream EV manufacturer. The Equinox EV is being offered in five variants, each with the option of a front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive system – though keep in mind AWD systems will cut range expectations a bit.

GMC Hummer EV – After about a decade of being off the market, GM is bringing back the Hummer in two all-electric versions – a pickup truck and an SUV. The versions are mostly identical, but the truck version is a bit larger and holds a larger battery. The pickup is about 20 in. longer than the SUV version, with a 9-in. longer wheelbase and longer rear overhang.

Cadillac LYRIQ – Cadillac’s first go at an all-electric car is the LYRIQ, a midsize SUV/crossover. This model is known for its weight stability placed low on the chassis, giving the driver a better feeling of control, especially around corners. The vehicle also features a wide, 33-in. LED display for its control panel. Cadillac also teamed up with Michelin to spec its models with LYRIC-specific tires.

Chevrolet Silverado EV – Chevrolet hasn't released full specs and information about this electrified pickup yet, but notable plusses include a huge battery (thus more range), standard all-wheel drive, and the ability to fold down the wall between the bed and cab to expand cargo space. This pickup will also be capable of towing up to 10,000 pounds and hauling up to 1,300 pounds of payload.

Chevrolet Blazer EV – GM hasn’t been confident on what kind of vehicle it wants the Blazer to be in the past. Once a competitor to the Jeep Wrangler, the company brought it back as a crossover in 2019, and now is introducing an all-electric version for the 2024 model year. Interestingly, the Blazer EV is being offered with front-, rear, and all-wheel drive configuration options.

GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 – GM hasn’t shared all of the details on this model yet. However, we do know that this all-electric pickup is being advertised to deliver 400 miles of range on a single charge – an exceptionally high number for a truck this size. GM says the truck will deliver 754 horsepower and 785 lb. ft. of torque in “max power” mode. The truck will also have an expandable bed up to 10’10”. It’s expected to be available in early 2024.

Cadillac CELESTIQ – The CELESTIQ is another model just announced as of this writing, and while you don’t need to be a millionaire to afford it, you probably should be if you’re a responsible spender. While GM hasn’t spilled all the details on this model yet, the company isn’t shy about sharing its target demographic for this EV hatchback by pricing it “north of $300,000.” The cars will be built to order, by hand, and customization choices abound.

TBA: Cruise Origin – We’re including this one just for fun, as it’s doubtful many consumers will need to own one. However, it’s something you might encounter out there one day: An electric, autonomous, steering wheel-less, mirrorless, pedal-less vehicle designed for ride-sharing. GM is introducing the Cruise Origin in San Francisco first, and production is expected to begin in 2023.
