About Jaguar Electric Vehicles
Despite only offering one all-electric vehicle to U.S. customers as of Q4 2022, nobody can claim that Jaguar isn’t taking electrification seriously in the 2020s.
For one, in early 2021, Jaguar Land Rover announced that all cars made under its luxury Jaguar brand will be fully electric by 2025, significantly sooner than several other electrification promises from well-known global brands. In addition, Jaguar Land Rover has promised an all-electric Range Rover by 2024.
Jaguar Land Rover also announced a new, dedicated, built-from-the-ground-up electric vehicle chassis called “Panthera” in mid-2022, which the brand says will be autonomous-driving ready. Paired with this chassis announcement, Jaguar also announced three new upcoming battery-electric SUVs based on this new platform. The company says all three of these EVs will be ready by 2025 and will be manufactured in the UK.
In addition to the all-electric I-Pace (more on that model below), Jaguar also offers what it refers to as a “mild hybrid” in the 2023 F-Pace P400 R-Dynamic S. This model’s 3.0L turbocharged i6 engine is paired with an electric motor in the name of power, as it allows the vehicle to deliver the driver instant torque and higher power outputs than would have been possible without the electrification element.
Not to be overlooked in the race for electrification superiority among OEMs is Jaguar Land Rover’s “future skills programme” announced in the middle of 2022. The company says this program’s goal is to retain as much as possible of its 29,000-strong workforce by giving 60% of them the skills to develop, manufacture, and service modern luxury electric vehicles. In doing so, the company believes its all-electric transition will be a much smoother process.
In 2020, Jaguar announced its entrance into the world of “mobility-as-a-service” via a partnership with Pivotal, which offers consumers all-inclusive, no-commitment subscriptions for Jaguar and Land Rover models, including the all-electric I-Pace. The company said it forecasts car subscriptions will account for 10% of its sales in Europe and the U.S.
Here’s what to know about the latest electric Jaguar models (base trims as of Q4 2022):
I-Pace – The Jaguar brand only has one fully-electric vehicle in its line-up, but boy does it make it count. With a staggering 62 international awards to its name in categories ranging from design and performance to sustainability (some of the highlights include World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year, European Car of the Year and World Green Car, all from 2019), today this crossover SUV is known in large part for its punchy powertrain developed with influence from Jaguar’s Formula E racing arm (a motorsport championship series exclusively for electric cars). In fact, Formula E and Jaguar even partnered on a production-based racing series using Jaguar’s I-Pace SUVs. The series was called the I-Pace eTrophy and ran alongside Formula E's fifth and sixth seasons, from 2018-2020. The I-Pace is capable of producing 394 horsepower and delivers 512 lb.-ft. of torque.
The I-Pace was an early all-electric SUV choice for drivers when it debuted in 2019, but now there are others in this category that have lapped Jaguar’s first EV when it comes to price and aspects like battery range and charge times. For example, the I-Pace’s 90kWh battery pack has a range of up to 246 miles per charge, placing it toward the lower end of the range spectrum for all-electric SUVs.
That’s not to say the I-Pace isn’t loaded with desirable features though, as Jaguar makes up for some of the vehicle’s shortcomings by focusing on performance, style and technology to continue to entice its passionate fanbase. The I-Pace comes standard with a Meridian 3D surround sound system, a 10-in. infotainment display, a wide array of driver-assistance and active safety features and 20 in. wheels. Even the seats are a technological powerhouse, featuring 16-way movement and the ability to heat and cool.
